Tailwheel Endorsement

A tailwheel endorsement is a certification that allows a pilot to fly an aircraft with a tailwheel configuration. Unlike tricycle gear planes, tailwheel aircraft have a third wheel located at the tail, making them more challenging to operate on the ground and during takeoff and landing.

A tailwheel endorsement typically requires additional flight training beyond what is covered in a standard pilot’s license. This training includes ground instruction on the mechanics of tailwheel aircraft, as well as practical flight training to develop the necessary skills to operate the aircraft safely.

During training, pilots learn how to handle the unique challenges of taxiing, takeoff, and landing in a tailwheel airplane. These skills include using differential braking to control the aircraft’s direction on the ground and managing the aircraft’s pitch and roll during takeoff and landing.

Once a pilot has successfully completed the required training and demonstrated proficiency in operating a tailwheel aircraft, they will receive a tailwheel endorsement on their pilot’s license. This certification allows the pilot to fly tailwheel aircraft and is an excellent way to expand a pilot’s flying skills and experience.
